Puppy/Beginner Group Class Curriculum

Puppy/Beginner Class - Week 1 (Always FREE Class)

 

  • · Introduction– Name, dogs name, what your dog was bred to do, goals, something positive about your dog. Homework, look up breed online akc.org
  • · How your dog learns and how we train – our energy, positive, reward for good ignore and redirect for bad.
  • · Timing –how important timing is and consistency.
  • · Body Language vs. Tone – Move less, talk less
  • · Be able to touch your dog anywhere – for grooming and vet handling
  • · Focus Command – Root of all training.
  • · Potty Training – 14 days in a row!
  • · Crate Training – size, length of time, feeding in crate

Puppy/Beginner Class - Week 2

  •    Review – focus command
    • Unwanted behaviors – redirection and reward
    • Jumping – how jumping is created, why dogs jump, how to fix it
    • Sit for greeting – the auto sit
    • Teeth on skin – how to discourage
    • Sit with Release – how we release everything.
    • Collars/Leashes – proper fitting and different types of collars for different uses
    • Toys – which ones to use. How breed type affects the type of toy is best (or worst)
    • Walking on a leash properly – difference between walking and heeling.  

Puppy/Beginner Class - Week 3

  •  Review – focus, sit with release. Walking on loose leash
    • Leave it – leaving things alone. Can never have
    • Drop it – drop it but replace it or possible resource guarding can build
    • Down – reward in the direction you want the behavior to be
    • Nutrition – foods vs foods (www.dogfoodadvisor.com)  

Puppy/Beginner Class - Week 4

  • · Review – focus, sit with release, leave it, take it, down with release
  • · Walking on a leash & Leave it – ignoring things on a walk
  • · Basics of Grooming
  • · Come  – How recall is taught and learned
  • · Stay with Release ­– reinforce word of prior commands

Puppy/Beginner Class - Week 5

  •  Review- focus, sit with release, leave it, take it, down with release, come, stay
    • Socialization to other animals- how to read opposing dog
    • Proper greeting to other dogs on lead – sniff and go
    • Come with Sit – combing commands before reward
    • Pass the dog - have stranger tell your dog commands
